There has been extensive news coverage and hype this month around the recent Banksy street-art mural that literally popped up on the hanging door of a bombed house in Gaza… and in true Banksy fashion, it was a clever choice of canvas and painting with an attached sentiment conveyed visually for the world to ponder, and we are very sure it was all well-intentioned.

As a fan of Banksy’s talents, and what he anonymously represents as a politically-charged global street artist, we watched the video release that followed from his visit to the war-torn region and felt it was very powerful.

His brand of street-art always conveys an instantly grasping message, and the marketing or PR aspects of what he does have a momentum all of its own; and always grabbing much attention in the headlines.

Banksy has become very much globally renowned for his work over the years, and the three paintings he revealed whilst in Gaza certainly got the kind of coverage worldwide expected. It’s quite easy for any artist to criticise what the artist has achieved over the years, but the manner in which it is done… it must surely be respected!

But the Banksy in Gaza publicity stunt didn’t just end with the clever visual message… on the ground in the region where many conflicts, hardship, and struggles exist amongst local communities, it brought much ill-feeling from locally based creatives and artists who feel they are very much unheard and supported in comparison to the already famous UK artist.

The controversy escalated locally when the owner of the demolished house door on which Banksy chose as the canvas for one of his paintings got duped into selling it to another person for a fraction of the price it is likely to be worth. The situation eventually escalated into local Police having to seize the art work due to the dispute it caused.

The other interesting local response was general feelings invoked about a famous, western artist coming into the region anonymously, and getting such an array of global publicity within days.

Many struggling local creatives and artists on the ground questioned why their work is never supported by the wider global communities.

A natural response we felt when considering the lack of local opportunities for creatives in Gaza, and then we heard about a young 13-year-old boy who decided to convey this local feeling with his proactive response.

Mohammad Qreqi’s actions captured our attention not only because we always strive to support local based talent who require it all around the world, but because we felt that his actions, similarly as with Banksy’s work; also conveyed a hard-hitting underlying message with an alternative angle of food-for-thought for the masses.

Mohammad heard about the visit of the famous western artist to the region of Gaza from his Facebook feed online and chose to recreate a replica version of the weeping Greek Goddess Niobe, on exactly the same kind of door that Banksy did whilst in Gaza.

His plea from his actions is to be heard by the global community in the same light as other talented artists such as Banksy are heard, or at least given the opportunities to get heard.

He posts his artwork on Facebook regularly and has interacted with many online from outside the region who show appreciation for his talents. When other local artists were shown the door on which Mohammad created his replica, they all thought it was the real Banksy version itself and this has enhanced his own belief in his talents further and he is hoping it will also encourage others to show support.

Matt Howes is a globe-trotting DJ hailing from Norwich in the UK. Whilst he’s literally putting his hometown on the map with every next step he takes and spanning the breadth of the planet for gigs and appearances, what he also does almost by default is connect with people on a very human level… and he’s very much aware of this natural responsibility he carries with him.

‘Scratch: The DJ Matt Howes Documentary’ has been a labour of love by a small team of university students and has had quite the process over the last 6 months.

From having raised money with Kickstarter crowdfunding and with the support of a network of great individuals who also feature in the film such as renowned UK DJ Tim Westwood (BBC/Captial Xtra) UK grime artist Devlin (Universal) and actor Richard Wilson (BBC).

Within days of releasing the documentary online only, it has had well over 100K organic views and thousands of comments, retweets, shares… and rising by the day.

Matt has always been keen on proving to his audiences and the world as a whole that he is all about ABILITY and he does not like what the term (DIS) ability insinuates to anyone… heck, just 2 weeks after his accident abroad he was out of hospital and playing to thousands in a club, never having done so with just one arm.

MATT HOWES

Being able to adapt in life is what Matt has made look easy and it’s just a small insight into his natural character, his strength and very much his awareness of what his actions mean to others around him.

But foremost from his professional standing is the talent that drives everything… without which none of what he has achieved and is destined to achieve would be possible.

Many respond by saying that Matt’s story makes them feel lucky, and others are simply left inspired to get through whatever struggles it is they may be experiencing in their own lives and to feel motivated to keep fighting.

Matt exudes a combination of natural passion, incredibly adaptive talent, and all mixed with a sense of purpose he has come to recognize as so much bigger than even himself:

“It’s been 4 years now since I lost my arm in the accident and looking back now, it naturally took my life in a completely different direction. I believe everything happens for a reason, and despite the daily challenges, the major ups and all the downs… this is me and I’ve reached a place now where I don’t need to sell what I am on this Earth to do.

I’m doing it already and if people want to support me or not it doesn’t matter but if by doing what I do I can inspire or encourage others to also pursue their dreams, then I’m happy!”

You just have to spend a few minutes talking with Matt and his love for what he does will instantly be clear. He leaves you feeling like anything is possible, and that life is to be lived today… that no one should wait years and years doing what they don’t want to do just because they feel like they have to.

If you have a dream, an ambition, if there are things you want to do with your life… do them now, start planning and get on your path sooner rather than later. That’s the message Matt is advocating wherever he goes.

And if there are obstacles, which there are for everyone wherever you may be in the world… face them head on and do what it takes to get through the difficult moments. And more than everything else… make all the tests become your strength that makes you stay human, and become a really good human at that too who everyone wishes to be around.

In addition to DJ’ing around the world as a pro DJ, Matt is a charity ambassador for the Limbless Association and Reach charity in the UK and has also been

The Uber-like smartphone app called SheTaxis/SheRides was launched after some initial delays because of too few women drivers to serve the demand.

“I think it’s a safer way of working because we don’t deal with money and normally we are going to pick up 90 percent just women. Even if you call with a man the two of you could come to it. It’s not just women.

“Sometimes when you pick up a woman in the morning, they are always late, they are putting on makeup, sometimes they put the nylons on in the back and everything and if it’s a man, they won’t do it. And sometimes if they have a problem, they will talk to me,” she added.

SheTaxis/SheRides said the service could also benefit some Muslim and Orthodox Jewish women whose religious beliefs prohibit them from traveling alone with unrelated men.

“We are not a car service as such. We are an app that pairs women with other women,” stressed Stella Mateo, founder, and president of SheTaxis/SheRides.

Mateo said in New York City, there are about 600,000 taxi rides per day. She also said less than three percent of drivers are women, but about 60 percent of riders are women. Taxi dispatch call centers across the city help to coordinate the SheTaxis/SheRides service.

Mateo said another goal of the SheTaxis/SheRides service is to encourage women to become small business owners by driving on their schedule.

“Mothers that want to work that don’t have the flexibility of a schedule, here we go. College students, girls, that want to go out there and work when they’re not in school to help pay for their education. It’s a great opportunity. Women are really welcoming it.”

And if I could go on a break to have lunch, I shut it off, then I put it back. It’s comfortable because you are your own boss.”

According to SheTaxis/SheRides, this is the only female-only driver service of its kind in the United States. And the company hopes to launch similar female taxi services in other parts of the country.

Do you think it is a good idea? Can a similar service be replicated across territories worldwide?
