Road Trip: Oakland, California
Today the Road gives a shout-out to our Northern California counterparts at the Coalition for Clean & Safe Ports. The Oakland alliance's brand new website is here. (You can read all the press buzz about their efforts to build communities around the Port of Oakland with clean air and good jobs here, and be sure to check out the In These Times story "Big Trucking Deal" about both Golden state coalitions, cross-posted in today's Alternet.) Several Bay Area port drivers and representatives from over 75 green, environmental justice, community, labor, faith-based and public health organizations journeyed south to be a part of the historic victory at the Port of Los Angeles on March 20. Now they are busy at work to transform Mayor Ron Dellum's vision for Oakland into reality by building a world-class port that rejects the abusive "sweatshop on wheels" system for truck drivers and: 1) Takes bold measures to reduce environmental impacts; 2) Stimulates sustainable development; 3) Creates an economic engine with real benefits and shared prosperity for both business and local residents. Now that sounds like a smart roadmap. Stay tuned to learn more about the green milestones coming to Oakland in the months ahead. |
